Walpole, S. & McKenna, M. (2005). The literacy coach's handbook: A guide to research-based practice. NY: Guilford Press.

Author: Walpole, S. & McKenna, M.

This book is most helpful to literacy coaches, K-3, who are helping schools to implement Reading First and/or core reading programs. The book overviews the concept of school-wide reading programs based upon SBRR and the five components of reading. It illustrates use of formative assessment to guide instruction with DIBELS as the exemplar assessment. Many sample schedules that would allow schools to differentiate instruction and use response to intervention are provided. The final third of the book talks more specifically about roles that a literacy coach plays in such a school. Coaching observations and feedback forms focus on using five minute intervals or observing for dimensions of instruction. Good suggestions are made for keeping feedback specific and positive.
