The Adolescent Literacy Coaching Project (ALCP)

Author: Kannapel, P.

This is the first year evaluation report of the Adolescent Literacy Coaching Project for the State of Kentucky. The study involves a small number of coaches in grades 4-12. While the state funded the professional development for coaches, they did not fund the literacy coach positions themselves. The sample size was small because many districts could not afford to hire coaches. The results of the study are interesting, however, and will be helpful to others. The executive summary in the opening few pages provides a solid overview of the study's findings. Reading the whole report provides more detail. The initial findings are that the project offered good support to literacy coaches based on the IRA Standards for MS and HS Literacy Coaches. In turn, teachers found the literacy coaches helped them to improve their instruction.
