Professional Development Impact Study

This is an ongoing study funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The partners are American Institutes for Research (prime contractor); MDRC, a non-profit research foundation; and Sopris West. The study involves second-grade teachers who are already using one of two widely adopted reading programs. The study compares the effectiveness of two professional development models: Model 1) a 40-hour summer institute and three day-long seminars during the following school year and Model 2) the same as in Model 1, but teachers also receive intensive coaching (approximately three hours of coaching per teacher per week). The first substantive report will be published in the winter of 2007. It will document the design of the project and the results of the analyses conducted on data collected during the 2004-2005 school year.
