The authors criticize the recent reliance on pre-packaged commercial teaching products rather than on teachers' knowledge bases, and say that alternative models of professional development are needed. Models ought to take into account the multi-faceted nature of being a teacher. They say professional development models must take into consideration these complexities in order to be effective. They also provide a review of three relevant books that offer alternative models of professional development. These books emphasize collaboration, balancing theory and practice, and administrative support for teachers while also offering practical advice for the classroom.
