Egawa, K. (2003). Did you know about NCTE's Reading Initiative? Talking Points, 15, 29-30.
Author: Egawa, K.
The NCTE Reading Initiative is a professional program based on study groups that aims to help teachers explore their own reading histories and interests, and has teachers analyze the literature available in their own classrooms for its readability and student interest. It also encourages the teachers to think about the impact of leveled texts. The article cites the South Carolina Reading Initiative (SCRI) where the literacy levels in schools in 51 of 86 school districts were dramatically affected by this program. A brief outline is provided for how to start a Reading Initiative effort within a school or district, and offers realistic models for and the financial benefits of coaching to a school district.
