Bacon is a a sixth grade teacher who has developed different strategies for coaching literacy within the classroom. She herself has literacy coaching training, but also has her students act as coaches to one another, relying on their varying areas of strengths to help each other become better readers. She offers several activities that can be done in class in small groups, and in front of the whole class, as well as ways of assessing student progress. She says about peer-coaching: "...my students not only concentrate harder to impress their peers with fluent reading but also attend to their miscues and self-correct often." She has kept records of scores from QRIs and has noticed a marked increase in scores when students help coach each other.
